The Sun is also a Star by Nicola Yoon.
Seldom do I find myself relating to a character or getting
attached to a fictional character as I did with Natasha. The 17 year old who
arrived from Jamaica ten years ago, and tonight she might leave the USA
forever. Daniel, the male protagonist who believes in love and poetry but is
being pushed by his parents for something he doesn't aspire to become meets
Natasha who believes in science and facts who have a total of twelve hours to
meet , get to know each and maybe fall in love, beyond their differences.
Natasha who refuses to believe in the concept of love and destiny changes when
a part of her wants to believe in them as she gets to know Daniel. Whereas
Daniel who believed in love, starts believing that none of it exists and that
it's all just merely a game of chemicals .The spark between them is undeniable
which makes it so much more fascinating. The book is different in every
possible way, be it the style of writing, the construction of the book, the
fact that we have the different point of views of each of the two characters in
turn is intriguing & even the characters themselves. Each & every
moment they spend together is so well-defined that you can actually feel them, you
can feel Natasha's vulnerability, Daniel hopelessly falling in love with her
and the intensity of it. I liked how the
book was set during an expanse of a whole day. I was overwhelmed and amazed by
the author's pen as the book ended with a pleasant surprise. It is definitely
worth a read if you're looking for something beautiful yet fun.

DeleteYour synthesis of the books makes me want to read it. Well written Sneha. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot !

ReplyDeleteThank you so much Tejas 💕
DeleteDear Sneha,
ReplyDeleteGood to see you boozing more frequently now, with this review coming within a week of your last one!! 😊
This time a lesser known Title, although the Genre am sure is quite popular (esp. amongst Teens 😊). In your brief synopsis, you have quite well depicted the conflicting beliefs & differences of the central characters, and yet apparently how they fall into the strongest & intense emotion of Love. And all this within a short period of a Day !! A very interesting & attractive premise I should say. And therefore, no wonder there is a motion picture by the same title, which released in May’19 (exactly a year ago) based on this Book. The Movie is available on lesser popular OTT – google Play & Youtube paid version.
I recall at least two other movies on the same premise, where the characters meet and get to spend just a day together and yeah … fall in Love. “Before We Go” & “Before Sunrise”. You may wish to check out these movies (both on NF), if you are “caught up” in this universal subject emotion 😊. Although should warn you that both these flicks does not end in the expected way, unlike how this Book ends in a ‘pleasant surprise’ as quoted by you.
Very good going Girl !! You are indeed doing a great service of inspiring folks like me, having fallen out of the habit of being an avid reader, and all the books in my library just gathering dust !! Keep them coming and who knows I may pick up a paperback soon, after almost a decade long hiatus 😊
